Acupuncture is one of the oldest forms of medicine which has been used for over 300 years and originated in China. Fine needles are inserted at certain sites around the body for therapeutic and preventative purposes.
Acupuncture can be used as a single therapy or used as part of a treatment when felt necessary by the therapist. Acupuncture stimulates the sensory nerves under the skin and into the muscles and soft tissues. This results in the body producing natural substances, such as pain relieving endorphins which helps to reduce pain and relax the tissues.
Traditional Chinese acupuncture is based on the belief that an energy or 'life force' flows through the body in channels called meridians. This life force is known as Qi, which is pronounced as “chee”. Practitioners that adhere to traditional chinese medicie believe that when the Qi cannot flow freely throughout the body or a channel becomes blocked, this can cause injury or illness. So, restoring the flow of Qi by strategically inserting needles throughout the body is said to restore health.
Some patients may experience some side effects of treatment, however your therapist will explain these in detail on appointment and take an in depth history to ensure Acupuncture is the right treatment choice for your complaint.
