This is a treatment modality used by many different physical therapists to help promote soft tissue healing. Ultrasound therapy has been used for several years dating back to the 1880's however; the scientific evidence is still disputed. Practitioners worldwide continue to use ultrasound as part of their treatments based on their personal experience rather than the evidence based literature.
Ultrasound waves are generated at different frequencies, higher than the human ear can hear and penetrate the soft tissues.
Small vibrations caused by these sound waves cause friction on a molecular level and generates an increase in temperature at the targeted site of injury or pain.
The micro vibrations from the ultrasound can have an effect on the fibres that form scar tissue by disrupting them and effectively helping to break them down. This in turn may help the therapist to provide an increased stretch along these fibres and increasing correct fibre alignment needed for optimum tissue health.
